UPDATE: Five killed in storms in Poland

Polish Prime Minister Beata Szydło said the deaths were a "great tragedy" and pledged to help everybody who requires help after the storms.

Two of the dead, girls aged 13 and 14, were at a scout camp where nearly 150 campers had been cut off and emergency services were unable to get in. The campers have since been evacuated, and 27 of them were taken to hospital.

Poland's scouting organisation ZHP has announced a month of mourning.

Meanwhile, a 48-year-old man was crushed to death by a tree, a second man, aged 29, died in his tent when it was knocked over by the wind, and a 56-year-old woman was killed by a falling chimney after a tree fell on a building.

Electricity supplies have been cut to around 85,000 homes.

Bad weather is expected to continue with storm warnings issued to five provinces: the warmińsko-mazurskie province in Poland's northeast, łódzkie, in the centre, małopolskie and śląskie in Poland's south, and świętokrzyskie in the southeast. (vb/pk)
