Polish president’s first veto on government bill

President Andrzej Duda vetoed an amendment to a law on regional audit chambers on Wednesday -- the first time he has vetoed a bill backed by Poland’s conservative Law and Justice government.

Duda’s spokesman Krzysztof Łapiński said the president had "listened to the voices of... organizations representing different levels of local government in Poland, which point out that the law would give central government the possibility of over-interfering in the activities of local government."
The new law changes the rules on appointing the presidents of regional audit chambers and extends the supervisory powers of such offices over regional authorities.
The law will now go back to parliament for reconsideration.
Duda hails from the ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party, which won a landslide election victory in late 2015 on promises of sweeping change.
