"I consider this entry to the UNESCO World Heritage List as a tribute to many, many generations of Tarnowskie Góry citizens," said the mayor of Tarnowskie Góry, Arkadiusz Czech, after hearing about the decision.

The sites include 28 locations, not only in Tarnowskie Góry, but also in neighbouring Zbrosławice and Bytom. These are what remains of former silver, lead and zinc ore mines.

Over the course of several centuries, several thousand mines were in operation in the Tarnowskie Góry area. About 20,000 shafts and more than 150 kilometres of underground tunnels remain.

This is the first UNESCO World Heritage site in the Silesia mining region and the 15th in Poland. (mol/pk)
