The 2018 United Nations climate summit COP24 will be held in Katowice, the heart of Poland's coal-mining industry.

Katowice Mayor Marcin Krupa said: “Many associate Katowice with industry. But this is not altogether correct because it is one of the greenest cities in Poland” with almost half of its surface covered by forests and other vegetation.
United Nations climate chief Patricia Espinosa said Poland was one of the most experienced climate summit hosts and that she hopes the 2018 conference will increase climate protection levels.
Tens of thousands of politicians, scientists, activists and businesspeople from 190 countries are expected to attend the summit in Katowice.
Poland has hosted the annual COP24 event twice already, in Warsaw in 2013 and in Poznań in 2008. (vb/pk)
