In a letter tendering his resignation to Defence Minister Antoni Macierewicz, the head of the commission, Wacław Berczyński, said his decision was taken due to “personal reasons”.

The defence ministry issued a statement saying that the resignation was accepted by Macierewicz.

Just ten days previously, on the seventh anniversary of the crash which killed 96 people including President Lech Kaczyński, the commission led by Berczyński reported its findings so far in the case. It said that the plane was probably brought down by an explosion.

Berczyński has been replaced by Kazimierz Nowaczyk, the former deputy head of the commission.
