The aim of the UN climate accord, agreed in Paris in December 2015, is to keep the increase in global average temperatures below 2 degrees Celsius compared to the pre-industrial era and to continue efforts to limit temperature increases to 1.5 degrees.

Carbon Market Watch's ranking shows that Sweden, Germany and France are on the right track towards achieving 2030 climate change goals.

The organisation's report also said that some countries are using loopholes to avoid fulfilling their obligations under the Paris Agreement.

Carbon Market Watch aims to ensure that environmental market-based mechanisms contribute to the fight against climate change. (vb)
