Two employees of the company operating the van were injured and hospitalised following the explosion, which happened at around 2:00 pm.

Some 350 people were evacuated from the area.

Acetylene gas is used in welding and other commercial applications.

“A vehicle carrying acetylene tanks exploded at the crossroads between Szucha and Litewska streets. Two employees of the company which owned the van were taken to hospital,” a spokesman for fire fighters was reported as saying.

He added that no one else was injured.
