The SITE Intel Group, which monitors Jihadi intelligence in the region, reported that the ISIS arm in Aleppo province released a photo "that showed deceased fighter Abu Khattab al-Polandi.”

Poland’s RMF FM broadcaster said that experts suggest that the man in the photo published by the Jihadi group bears a resemblance to Pole Jakub Jakus, a former resident of Sandomierz in southern Poland.

The international police organisation Interpol has issued an arrest warrant for Jakus, who reportedly converted to Islam and moved to Syria, where he allegedly joined the so-called Islamic State.

There has not been any official confirmation that the man who died was Polish.

In April 2016, the International Centre for Counter Terrorism (ICCT) reported that the as many as 40 Polish nationals could be currently fighting within IS. (rg/pk)
