The charges relate to incidents between 2005 and 2015, most of which took place after 2013, a spokeswoman the Prosecutor’s Office in Gdańsk said.

She added that the surgeon has denied wrongdoing.

The man was detained on Tuesday after being investigated since late 2014. More than 2,000 women were interviewed during the inquiry.

The man claimed to feel unwell and was taken to hospital after he was detained, delaying his questioning until the late hours of Tuesday evening.

Meanwhile, the doctor’s residence and surgery were searched on Tuesday and investigators recovered a firearm. The suspect has a gun permit but it does not allow for possession of the gun that was found. (vb/pk)
