Modernising the mining industry is a priority for the government, Polish Prime Minister Beata Szydło said on Sunday as the country marked Miner's Day.

While at celebrations in Jaworzno, southern Poland, Szydło said Poland is entering “a time of serious investments that will pave the way for a good future for Polish mining.”

One of those investments is an extraction project in the “Grzegorz” shaft in Jaworzno, under state-run power group Tauron, Szydło said.

“This is a great future, but these are not just promises. These are facts that are happening before our very eyes,” Szydło said, adding: “This gives a good outlook for the development of the sector.”

Miner's day 2016 comes just days after eight miners died after a tremor at copper giant KGHM's Rudna mine in Poland's south west. (vb/pk)
