The lion cubs are an extremely rare species, with only three genetic lineages remaining in the world.

The employees of the zoo in Borysew are taking good care of them, hoping that breeding programmes with other zoos in the world will help the species survive.

"We've expanded the global population by 15 percent," zoo owner Andrzej Pabich told the AFP agency.

"The selection process is a lot of work, then we have to choose the right food and create the right environment to have this many offspring," he sdded.

White lions and tigers are both extremely rare, numbering only a few hundred worldwide, and owe their appearance to a recessive gene. They are not albino.
