“Prosecutors have opened an investigation into this matter, which is to determine whether the officer did not exceed his responsibility,” said a spokesperson for the district prosecutor's office in Szczecin.

According to preliminary reports, the 22-year-old driver did not stop at a police roadblock, and careened straight in the direction of one of the officers on duty.

The policeman reportedly first fired a warning shot, and then shot at the car. It was the second bullet which killed the driver.

Prosecutors, as well as forensic and ballistics experts, are working on the scene.

Their investigations will be able to determine the exact circumstances of the incident.

The policeman in question has not been arrested. (rg)
