The A4 runs through southern Poland from the border with Germany to that with Ukraine, passing major Polish cities including Wrocław, Katowice and Kraków. It now has a total length of 672 km.

The motorway was originally meant to be finished in time for Euro 2012, though this timetable proved too ambitious.

The final part to be completed was a 40 km section between Rzeszów and Jarosław, both towns in south-eastern Poland.

After joining the EU in 2004 Poland embarked on an ambitious motorway building program, aided by EU funds. The country currently has over 1,600 km of motorways in use, out of a total 2,000 km planned.
