Janusz Dzisko, a spokesman at the State Sanitary Inspection unit in Olsztyn said the woman had cared for the younger brother of a seven year-old boy who was also confirmed with contracting the bacteria last week.
“Swabs taken from the lady revealed the E. Coli bacteria in her body, which is producing toxins. Whether or not this is the same type that is causing disease in Germany will be known in two days,” Dzisko said.
The seven year-old boy who also has an E. coli infection caught it from his father who had recently been in Germany.
It was announced on Sunday that four more people had died in Germany, bringing the total number of deaths from the E. coli outbreak to 35.
German authorities have indicated that food items including bean sprouts and other vegetables originating from a producer in Lower Saxony, Germany, are the most likely source of the infection. (pg)
