The nurses are demanding that managers fulfil promises made earlier this year to increase wages. The nurses have received only part of a promised PLN 400 (around EUR 90) raise.

A spokesperson for the nurses’ union at the hospital said that low wages “pose a threat to the lives of the hospitalised children”, as more and more nurses are leaving the hospital due to being underpaid.

As a result there is not enough staff to properly take care of the young patients.

The hospital has stopped admitting new patients, with some who were already under care being sent to other hospitals in the region.

The authorities of the Children’s Memorial Health Institute did not comment on the exact numbers regarding how many children have been moved to other facilities. (tf/rg)
