The 40 kg SAT-AIS-PL satellite is to be launched in four years’ time.

Dr. Grzegorz Brona, president of Creotech Instruments, which is part of a consortium building the device, told Polish Radio: “The satellite will supply information that will help improve the safety of maritime transport on the Baltic and other seas.”

Brona added: “We have strictly defined users who will pay for its maintenance. The satellite will be prepared over the next four years. Launch is planned for around 2020.”

The satellite will spend at least three years, and possibly longer, in orbit. The project has been commissioned by the European Space Agency.

The Polish space industry “has matured to the stage where it can carry out increasingly complicated projects,” Brona said. (pk)
