A counter-demonstration was held by the Pro-Right to Life organisation.
Marchers on the first demonstration, many of them feminists, left-wingers and supporters of the LGBT movement, brandished banners with slogans such as: "We demand legal, free abortion, free creches and kindergartens."
The motto of the demonstration, held in the run-up to International Women's Day on March 8, was: "Abortion in Defence of Life.”
Supporters of the counter-demonstration ridiculed that phrase, claiming it was a contradiction in terms. But exchanges between the two groups were peaceful, Polish Radio reported.
Poland, a staunchly Roman Catholic country, has some of the strictest abortion laws in Europe.
The organisers of the pro-abortion march said many women decide to have terminations anyway, but in conditions that often put their life in danger. (pk)
