The popularity of Warsaw mayor Hanna Gronkiewicz-Waltz has soared, with three in four of the Polish capital’s residents believing that she is running the city efficiently, according to a new survey.

In mid-2013, only 39 percent of residents thought Gronkiewicz-Waltz, a leading light in the centre-right opposition Civic Platform party, was running the city well.
The Warsaw Barometer survey found that 74 percent of respondents thought Gronkiewicz-Waltz was a good mayor, while 21 percent had the opposite view, and 5 percent declared they were unable to say.
A referendum in October 2013 attempting to recall Gronkiewicz-Waltz as mayor failed after an insufficient number of voters took part.
Gronkiewicz-Waltz's opponents forced the referendum after accusing her of steep hikes in the cost of public transport, cuts in education and increasing red tape.
Commenting on the new survey, Warsaw deputy mayor Jarosław Jóźwiak said: "We are happy that these results are improving, residents are seeing greater openness, better access to information.”
He added: “We have learned a certain lesson after the referendum.” (pk/di)
