Local authorities in Poland are storing incorrect personal data relating to hundreds of thousands of citizens, it has emerged.

The errors came to light during the creation of the central System of National Registers in March, when the process of comparing listings with citizens' PESEL national identification numbers began.

Typical mistakes relate to residential addresses, the personal data of a citizen's parents, surnames and postcodes.

It has been noted that inaccuracies could lead to disagreeable consequences, such as bailiffs, police or administrative officials homing in on the wrong individual.

Most of the mistakes in local databases were apparently made by officials when entering data into the system. Correcting the situation will take time, and a consistent method of verifcation has yet to be agreed upon. (nh/pk)
