PiS leader faces lawsuit over ‘treason’ comments

Thousands of citizens have said they aim to sue the leader of Poland’s governing Law and Justice (PiS), after he called the party’s opponents “Poles of the worst kind.”

Some 2,600 signed their names on a list of people who want to sue for the infringement of their personal rights.
A formal suit has not yet been filed, the district court in Warsaw’s Żoliborz district said on Tuesday. Jarosław Kaczyński lives in Żoliborz.
“Jarosław Kaczyński has […] undermined our sense of security in a country we love and want to live in,” said those who want to sue the PiS leader.
Referring to opponents of PiS’s plans for sweeping change, Kaczyński told the right-leaning broadcaster Telewizja Republika that Poland had “a horrid tradition of national treason”.
“It’s as if some people had it in their genes, people of the worst kind, who are now most active as they are sensing a threat,” he said.
In another development, Civic Platform MPs organized a brief protest in parliament on Tuesday, demanding an apology from Kaczyński for his words.
Several MPs held up large letters to form the sentence: “Kaczyński, apologise to Poles.” (aba/rg/pk)
