Defendant Dr Brunon Kwiecień (who waived his right to anonymity), was arrested in November 2012 , and his trial began in January 2014, taking place largely behind closed doors.
“We are dealing with a person who considered, planned, and was able to carry out an attack on the highest state authorities,” Prosecutor Mariusz Krason argued while summing up onThursday at the District Court in Kraków, southern Poland.
The defendant, who worked at the Kraków Agricultural University, had apparently planned to ram a vehicle packed with explosives into Poland's lower house of parliament when both the president (then Bronisław Komorowski) and prime minister (then Donald Tusk) were scheduled to be present.
Kwiecień has admitted to planning such an attack but he claims he was encouraged by a third party.
Officers from Poland's Internal Security Agency (ABW) were involved in an infiltration scheme that culminated in Kwiecień's arrest.
The defendant allegedly told investigators in February 2013 that he had wanted to punish “arrogant” politicians. (nh/rk)
