"The Health at a Glance" report puts the average rate of doctors in OECD countries at 3.3.
Meanwhile, data released by the Central Statistical Office (GUS) and Eurostat reveal that access to medical staff varies greatly between rural and urban areas.
"There are two times fewer medical facilities and pharmacies per 10,000 people compared to city populations," says Krzysztof Lipiński, deputy head of the European Fund for the Development of Polish Villages. "This impacts the detection rate of diseases."
According to the fund's recent report, one in four males inhabiting rural areas have never been to a medical specialist, while nearly 14 percent do not go to the doctor at all. The chief reason behind shunning clinics are travel costs. (aba)
