Poland's police budget gap up due to new regulations

By the end of the year, the country's law enforcement will be short of at least PLN 65 mln (over EUR 15 mln) needed to cover their current expenditure.

Such are the findings of a report released by the chief police headquarters in Warsaw, published by daily Rzeczpospolita.
As the authors of the document point out, the police's already meager financial situation is further aggravated by a July amendment to the country's criminal procedure laws.
Extra red tape, which entails the necessity of sending out more official letters to citizens, has raised the expenses earmarked for postal services alone by some 40 percent in several provinces, the report finds.
The increased workload has also had a negative effect on the crime detection rate in the country, daily Rzeczpospolita adds.
The Interior Ministry has committed to run an estimate of costs stemming from the law amendment and to reimburse these in full. (aba)
