Crime rate shrinking in Poland

Some 908,000 crimes were committed throughout last year, according to the ministry’s annual report on security released by daily Rzeczpospolita.

The downward trend concerns nearly all types of crimes, including manslaughter, rape, robbery, theft and burglary. The downtick, however, excludes embezzlement and economic fraud.

The report indicates Poland’s western flank as an area where people engaging in crime are most active, particularly in the southwestern province of Lower Silesia, the only region registering a rate higher than 3,000 offenses per 100,000 citizens. Warsaw, however, noted the highest rate of theft, standing at 795 per 10,000 people.

Meanwhile, residents of the country’s eastern parts are least exposed to illegal activity, with the southeastern Podkarpacie province noting 1,300 crimes per 100,000 citizens. (aba/rk)
