The husband, a former Roman Catholic priest, and his wife were also banned from being foster parents for fifteen years.

The affair came to light after one of the abused children told a teacher at a primary school in Ostrów Wielkopolski, mid-western Poland, that he was afraid to go home, owing to punishments he would receive from his foster parents.

The court found that the foster parents had inflicted a wide range of abuse on the children, including beating them on the head with a pestle, tying them to a chair at night with tights, as well as kicking and slapping them.

Likewise, the parents regularly threatened to leave the children in an orphanage or abandon them in the woods in the middle of the night. (nh/rk)
