OSCE human rights conference kicks off in Warsaw

The migration crisis in Europe and the situation in conflict-stricken Ukraine are among the issues tabled during the Human Dimension Implementation Meeting starting in the Polish capital on Monday.

Over the next two weeks, members of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) will hone in on the member states’ track record in safeguarding democracy and civic liberties.
The largest event of its kind in Europe, the annual two-week conference in the Polish capital is organised by watchdog organisation, the Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (OSCE).
The gathering brings together some 1,400 government delegates and activists hailing from 57 member countries and their partners.
OSCE Chairperson-in-Office, Serbian Foreign Minister Ivica Dačic, director of the Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODHIR) Michael Georg and the OSCE’s High Commissioner on National Minorities, Astrid Thors are among the key attendees of the event.
The participants will look into a number of present-day challenges, such as hate crimes, pursuing equal rights or fighting human trafficking, to assess how state authorities and civil societies are responding to them.
Sessions will also focus on issues including the role of civic society in protecting human rights and the assimilation of legal economic migrants.
The Human Dimension conference runs until 2 October. (aba/rg/rk)
