Gdańsk braced for transport revolution in September

The new Pomeranian Metropolitan Railway (PKM) is set to provide a rail connection to Gdańsk airport.

The PKM is an 18 km line linking Gdańsk Lech Wałęsa Airport, one of the busiest airports in the country, to the city itself, providing further connections to both regional and national transport routes.

It is the largest infrastructure investment ever undertaken by the Pomeranian province. The PKM is expected to be ready for passengers from 1 September.

Meanwhile also from September, a new 4.5 km tram line will link the centre of Gdańsk with the city's Piecki-Migowo district, with eight stops along the way.

“This is one of the consequences of the city authorities’ public transport policies in recent years; we are developing rail transport, that is ecological, more efficient, uses less energy” commented the deputy-mayor of Gdańsk Piotr Grzelak.

The new line will use five of the most modern trams in Poland, the Pesa Jazz Duo, which have cost PLN 54 million (EUR 13 million) to acquire. The total cost of the line is PLN 226 million (EUR 54 million), of which just over half was provided by the EU.

To accommodate the new tram line and the PKM, many existing bus routes are expected to be changed in September to allow better integration. (sl/rg/rk)
