Remigiusz Dominiak (the defendant has waived his rights to anonymity) rushed towards President Bronisław Komorowski just moments after the head of state arrived in Toruń, northern Poland, on 22 May.

Video footage recorded the 34-year-old lunging at Komorowski.

Security officers intercepted the man and whisked him away from the scene.

In the aftermath of the incident, there was much speculation in the media about the nature of the incident.

However, the man has told journalists at a press conference that his intentions were peaceful.

“It was not an attack on the president, I just wanted to hand over a leaflet in a dynamic way,” he claimed.

Dominiak's lawyer Mariusz Trela added that he hoped that the charges against his client would be dropped. (nh)
