Children's Day celebrated in Poland

About 6 million youngsters are celebrating Children's Day in Poland on Monday, continuing a tradition that began in 1950.

Besides parents typically treating their children on 1 June, schools, foundations and associations across the country are involved in various kinds of events.

As 1 June falls on a Monday this year, many initiatives got underway on Sunday, such as at the Służewiec Race Course in Warsaw, where children were able to run riot at a specially-built amusement park, as well as pretend to be jockeys on toy horses.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Ewa Kopacz invited a number of youngsters to a picnic on Sunday within the gardens of her chancellery.

Children's Parliament

On Monday, dozens of young Poles will take part in the so-called Children and Youth Parliament, held at the Poland's lower house of parliament (Sejm).

The first session of the children's parliament was held in 1994, and youngsters are given the opportunity to discuss key issues in society and the world at large.

The children will be joined in parliament today by public figures including the Ombudsman for Children Marek Michalak, Minister of Education Joanna Kluzik-Rostkowska and Labour Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak- Kamysz.

The day was established in November 1949 during the congress of the Women's International Democratic Federation (WIDF) in Moscow, and resultingly was first taken up by countries in communist bloc. (nh)
