Patient has healthy kidney removed in hospital mix-up

A 57-year-old man had a healthy kidney removed after surgeons at a hospital in Wrocław, western Poland, make a mistake.

The patient had a cancerous tumour on one of his kidneys, but surgeons at the University Clinical Hospital in Wrocław homed in on the wrong organ on Tuesday, it has emerged.

Members of the surgical team [that performed the operation] have been suspended from carrying out procedures until the circumstances of this incident have been clarified,” confirmed hospital spokesperson Monika Kowalska.

She stressed that once all information on the operation has been gathered, the local prosecutor's office will “immediately” be presented with material concerning the case.

A second operation is planned for Monday, and until then the patient must undergo dialysis. (nh)
