Kwaśniewski praised the result of Komorowski’s conservative challenger, Andrzej Duda, in the first round but said that “given Poland’s current international environment and the situation in our region, Poland needs above all experience and predictability”.

“Having a choice between experience and change, predictability and risk, I am all for giving my support to Bronisław Komorowski,” the former president said.

Komorowski thanked Kwaśniewski for what he described as all-important support. “We share the view that a continuation in handling domestic policy issues is of great significance,” he said.

Mariusz Witczak, a deputy of the Civic Platform party, Komorowski’s political base, has said that at a time the Polish left is in deep crisis, Kwaśniewski’s support has its political weight.

In Witczak’s view, his support will not prove to be a “kiss of death” for Komorowski in view of the fact that Kwaśniewski’s presidency was very favourably assessed by both the left and right sides of the political spectrum. (mk/jb)
