Komorowski voter base didn’t turn up for election?

The voter base of President Bronisław Komorowski did not exercise its duty to vote in Sunday’s presidential election, a political expert has said.

Late polls quoted by the TVN broadcaster and prepared by the IPSOS pollster indicate that law and Justice (PiS) candidate Andrzej Duda garnered 34.5 percent of the vote while Komorowski managed 33.1 percent.
“Never before in the history of Polish elections have the northern and western provinces, which are traditionally the electoral base of [the governing] Civic Platform and Komorowski, seen a much lower turnout than expected,” Miklos Mitrovits, from the Institute of History, Research Centre for the Humanities of Hungarian Academy of Sciences in Budapest, told the Hungarian InfoRadio.
According to the expert in Polish politics, both Komorowski and Duda have reserves of voters who did not turn up for the election. However, Mitrovits stressed, the most important issue is how people who voted for Paweł Kukiz (an independent candidate who garnered some 20.5 percent of the vote) will act on 24 May.
“It is impossible to predict how the electorate will vote in the second round, although it is known that they are likely to reject both Duda and Komorowski. The degree of rejection is, however, different and based on surveys, we can expect that they are closer to Duda,” the expert said. (rg)
