The phallic object, made from leather, filled with hair and adorned with a wooden tip, was found during archaeological works in an old latrine on Podwale Przedmiejskie, one of the city’s major thoroughfares.

“This is an extraordinary find for people researching the history of erotica,” said Marcin Tymiński, spokesman for the Provincial Heritage Monuments Office, who added that the ancient sex toy is thought to date from the latter half of the 18th century.

“The object was found in an old latrine, most probably after it was mistakenly dropped by the person who was using it,” he commented.

Other objects found in the latrine include pottery, jewellery, and the remains of wooden swords, pointing to the belief that it was located in the confines of a fencing school. (jb)
