A Warsaw light monument which has been proposed to commemorate the lives of the 96 people who died in the Smolensk plane crash, looks like the Nazi-era Nuremberg architecture, says Warsaw mayor Hanna Gronkiewicz Waltz.

“The Monument of Light is a similar idea to what was shown during [Nazi-era Nuremberg] rallies,” Gronkiewicz-Waltz told the TVN broadcaster.

The monument in the Polish capital has been proposed to be set up in front of the presidential palace in downtown Warsaw.

Since it would involve dozens of lights embedded in the ground, the monument will only be on at night, the Warsaw mayor said.

Gronkiewicz-Waltz is yet another opponent of the Warsaw monument. Earlier, the city’s Conservator of Monuments has already voiced his disapproval of the idea.

Despite the fact that the Smolensk crash occurred in 2010, no monuments have been erected, in Poland, or in Russia. (rg)
