Henryk Z. (full name withheld under Polish privacy laws) was released in January 2014, but on 20 March a court ruled that he should be confined in a special detention centre under the terms of a recently introduced law.

As the sentence is not yet binding, the defendant's lawyer has appealed.

''My client is over 60 years old, and he does not feel like someone who is still a big threat to society,'' Marcin Szyling told the Gazeta Wyborcza daily.

''He is ready to undergo chemical castration or a sex change operation,'' he confirmed.

The new law, which has been dubbed ''the law on beasts'', became active on 22 January 2014, and it pertains to those considered to be a grave threat to society.

During the 1970s and 1980s, Henryk Z. served several prison sentences for raping children.

In 1989, he raped and murdered a 5-month-old baby, for which he was given a 25-year sentence. (nh)
