This year, the eagles flew in a little later than usual to their nests in the Carpathian mountains.
The mountains which number around 450 pairs, are the largest breeding grounds of the birds in Europe.
"The first eagles appeared last Saturday, 4 April, […] in the Low Beskids,” the coordinator of Subcarpathian Eagle Conservation Committee, Dr. Marian Stój, told the PAP news agency.
Stój added that last year, the first eagles were spotted a week earlier.
Low temperatures this year could be among the reasons for the birds to postpone their yearly migration this season.
The lesser spotted eagle measures approximately 65 cm, with a wing span which reaches up to 165 cm. It feeds on rodents, amphibians, reptiles and larger insects.
In the Polish Carpathians, they build their nests mainly on fir trees. (rg)
