The two tourists used a mobile phone to call for help at nightfall on Sunday evening, but shortly afterwards rescuers lost all contact.

The tourists were near the peak of the Babia Góra massif, located on the border with Slovakia.

GOPR announced that the two were found on Monday, and were in a good condition, although with mild hypothermia. The tourists are both thought to be from Katowice in southern Poland.

Several dozen GOPR volunteers took part in the search, but they were hampered by snow falls, strong wind, a two-metre snow layer and visibility of only 10 metres.

The temperature in the upper parts of Babia Góra remained below freezing throughout the day. (sl/rg)
