Defrocked Roman Catholic priest settles child abuse case

Wojciech G., a former Roman Catholic priest, has settled ten charges of statutory rape and child abuse for a seven-year term and PLN 155,000 (EUR 38,000) compensation to victims.

The defrocked priest has not admitted his guilt, but settled due to a “poor mental condition and the public atmosphere”, his lawyer said.
The priest allegedly abused two children in Poland in 2000-2001 and eight more in the Dominican Republic over the period of 2009-2013.

Wojciech G. has also received a 15-year ban on working with children.

The prosecutors said the defendant had originally suggested a lower sentence, but this was rejected. The final sentence was arrived at through informal negotiations.

The defendant was not present at the sentencing. (an)
