Poles are going missing in record numbers thanks to a combination of open borders and tough economic conditions.

Last year, 20,845 people went missing, an increase of 6 percent on 2013 and nearly double the figure in 1997, says daily Dziennik Gazeta Prawna, citing police figures.
The biggest increase is among young people with degrees, the daily reports. Unable to find a job and meet parental expectations, due to a challenging labour market, more and more such people up sticks and move abroad without a word to anyone.
The most worrying trend is the rising number of children kidnapped by one of the parents without the other’s knowledge. (an)
