The matter came to light after a mother placed a dictaphone in her son's backpack.

The mother has claimed that her 6-year-old son was frightened to go to school, and that he eventually admitted that a certain teacher was the cause of his anxiety.

Material taped at the kindergarten in Szczodre appeared to confirm that the female teacher was sellotaping shut pupils' mouths if children talked out of turn.

Only fragments of the recordings have been made public, and Poland's Children's Ombudsman Marek Michalak has stressed that the matter is being further investigated.

However, for the time being a replacement teacher has taken over the class in question. (nh)
