The lawyers for Academy Award-winning film director and child abuser Roman Polański have asked for his extradition proceedings to the US to be heard behind closed doors.

The court in Kraków, the city of Polański’s birth, has been asked by his lawyers to keep the proceedings under wraps to protect the privacy of their client, PAP reported.

The motion has the support of Polański’s victim, now a woman in her early 50s, the lawyers said.

In 1977 Polański was charged with statutory rape after drugging a 13-year-old girl, then having anal sex with her at his Hollywood mansion. He later escaped the US amid media frenzy and suspicions of a biased court. Polański now lives in France.

The lawyers said media participation in the extradition trial could compromise their line of defence.

The extradition proceedings are due start on Wednesday, 25 February. (an)
