''Taking into account the nature of the evening – hundreds of thousands of people celebrating on squares and streets – officers did not report and serious incidents, or too many negative incidents involving fireworks,'' a police statement has confirmed.

13 people were detained in connection with the careless handling of fireworks.

Major concerts were staged in Polish cities including Warsaw, Wroclaw, Krakow, Poznan and Gdynia.

Meanwhile, police reported fewer New Year's Eve road accidents than in 2013.

A year ago, there were 102 accidents with 9 killed and 127 injured, while 147 were arrested for drink driving.

However, Wednesday's celebrations saw a decrease, with 65 accidents, 3 deaths on the roads, 72 injured and 125 detained for driving under the influence. (nh)
