Pawel Gras, General Secretary of governing party PO – and right-hand man to former PM Donald Tusk – has been dismissed from his position as a result of the party’s weak 27.3 percent result at Sunday’s local government elections.

The major opposition party Law and Justice (PiS) garnered 31.5 percent of the vote, according to unofficial exit polls.

Prime Minister Ewa Kopacz told daily Gazeta Wyborcza that the poor results for the party were due to the fact that PO registered a mere half of the candidates it put forward four years ago.

PM Kopacz was quoted by the daily that the decision to relieve Gras of his duties was taken after he had committed to assisting the newly-appointed European Council President Donald Tusk in Brussels. Gras has been replaced by Sports Minister Andrzej Biernat. (rg/jb)
