The ambulance was transporting the 40-year-old prisoner to a special Wroclaw hospital for convicts which treats patients from prisons across the Opole region.
The accident occurred at about 10 pm.
Initial findings indicate that the ambulance went through a red light, and collided with a Ford car.
The driver of the ambulance and a passenger in the Ford sustained the worst injuries, and both were hospitalised.
While in confinement, the prisoner allegedly swallowed a spoon in protest after claiming that prosecutors were dragging their heels with his case. (nh)
