Emergency services were called to Dlugi Targ, one of the most historic streets in the Baltic city, at about 4 pm.

Police have declined to comment on the identities of the men, but it is suspected that the victims were homeless.

According to public broadcaster TVP, local residents have indicated that three homeless men often slept at the site.

Police apparently tried to interview a homeless man in connection with the incident, but he was incapable of shedding light on the deaths.

In a separate incident, an 82-year-old woman died in Gdansk's Sobieszowo district on Wednesday afternoon, after a fire broke out at her apartment. Firemen managed to remove her from the flat, but she was already unconscious and medics were unable to revive her. (nh)
