Speaking to journalists on Monday morning, Joanna Trzaska-Wieczorek, chief press officer of the Presidential Chancellery, announced the decision following a meeting between President Bronislaw Komorowski and head of the junior coalition Polish Peasants’ Party, Deputy Prime Minister Janusz Piechocinski.

“During today’s meeting with the Deputy PM Piechociński, the President received confirmation that Ewa Kopacz is the candidate for the post of Prime Minister backed by the majority of the coalition,” Trzaska-Wieczorek said.

Ewa Kopacz was nominated by the ruling Civic Platform party last week for the top ministerial post. Her candidacy is to be formally announced by the coalition on Monday evening, Piechocinski said following Monday morning’s meeting with Komorowski.

Trzaska-Wieczorek said that President Komorowski will accept Donald Tusk’s resignation as Prime Minister, suggesting that this may happen on Thursday. (jb)
