The local fire brigade was notified at about 2 pm that a fire had broken out.

Firemen were informed that about 10 hectares were affected, but adverse conditions caused the flames to spread rapidly.

30 units of the regional fire brigade battled with the flames on the ground, and three specially equipped light aircraft were used to douse the fire from above.

Shortly after 6pm, firemen reported that they had mastered the situation.

No people were injured in the fire, although local forester Jacek Mazur told the TVN24 news channel that it will take years to bring the terrain back to its former glory.

“This is a tragedy for the foresters,” Mazur said.

“Losses could amount to several hundred thousand zloty,” he added.

It is unclear at present what caused the fire. (nh)
