The man died after being attacked with knives and broken bottles on Friday night after an argument between two groups of residents escalated until the situation got out of hand.

The 31-year-old received multiple injuries and was taken to hospital, and despite attempts at reanimation, the man died soon after.

Police have taken in six suspects in connection with the crime which took place in the Kazimierzowski estate in Krakow’s Nowa Huta district. Police found the suspects to be drunk when taken into custody, with cross-examinations expected to get under way after the men sober up.

Police have discounted the possibility that the fight may have been between two warring football hooligan groups, saying that it is most likely a one-off incident which got out of control. (jb)
