Professor Adam Pieczka, who lectures at Krakow's University of Science and Technology, has named the mineral Pilawit (in English Pilavite), after the municipality where he made his find.
Pieczka, who led the expedition to Pilawa Gorna, was later helped in his research by a number of Polish and international scientists.
“The research encompassed several stages,” Pieczka told Polish Radio.
A sample of the mineral has been presented to the Mineralogical Museum of the University of Wroclaw.
Meanwhile, an in-depth study of the newly discovered mineral is due to published by international journal Mineralogical Magazine.
Pilavite is the fourth previously unknown mineral to be found by Polish scientists in recent years. (nh)
