Canadian prime minister Stephen Harper said last week the exercises are part of NATO reassurance measures in response to the Ukraine crisis.

The North American troops trained with Poland's 6th Airborne Brigade in an "effort to assure our allies of our commitment to the region," Army Col. Steve Warren, a US Pentagon spokesman has said.

Training exercises are also taking place in the Baltic states of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia.

President Obama is to visit Warsaw next month to mark the 25th anniversary of Poland's democratic elections which ended decades of communism. (pg)
